Although I don't have any intentions to add another iPhone post at this belated stage, I think this post on Bokardo titled "Apple's iPhone and Social Proof" is worth reading.
Basically what the post says is, Apple did a good job of making people believe the iPhone will run out fast and therefore they should get in line now. When you see the picture of people forming a very long line to buy an iPhone, then you naturally get to believe that the iPhone is something truly valuable. That's a smart psychological move.
