NHN, the company behind #1 internet portal site of Korea, Naver, reported the company had the highest quarterly sales and profit in Q2.

Gross revenue for Q2 was 133 billion Won (= approx US$ 130M) and net profit was 32 billion Won (= US$ 30M).

To compare these numbers against Google's: For Q2, Google posted revenue of $2.5B and earnings of $770M.

So one can roughly say Google is about 20 times bigger than NHN in terms of sales and profit. This fits into my previous understanding that an easy (but crude) way of estimating Korean market size is to assume 1/20th the size of a comparable US market. Somebody told me this before, and this calculation kinda seems to work.

One twentieth, man -- way to go, Korea. Yet another reason why Korean startups should start thinking global from day 1.

Revenue breakdown for NHN is:

  • Keyword advertisement (a la Google Adsense) : 51%
  • Online gaming : 22%
  • On-site banner ads : 19%
  • Ecommerce: 7%
  • Other : 1%
It's good to see NHN's portfolio is a bit more diversified than that of Google. The combined portion of advertising out of total sales is 70% for NHN, way lower than 95+% for Google.
